Cortana has been the baby project of Microsoft over the past few years and the tech giant has left no stone unturned to bring this at par with Apple’s Siri. The launch of Windows 10 marked the birth of Cortana in the world of PCs. Cortana comes with a host of features and can have tons of your jobs done, be it playing a track, setting an alarm or searching for anything.

Although Cortana proved itself to be a great voice assistant, but there are many PC users who just don’t feel the need to clearly utter words into their microphones for Cortana to have their job done. The Laptop users anyway stay wary of this personal assistant for Windows 10, thanks to the fact that it is a real battery sucker.
So if you aren’t plugged in, it’s much better to have this feature turned off to save juice for your portable device. Another drawback of this personal assistant is that it doesn’t work offline and thus is almost useless if you don’t have a stable high-speed internet connection.
Prior to the release of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, there was a toggle switch through which users could disable Cortana on their Windows 10. But this toggle switch has been removed in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. However, there’s a simple registry hack through which you can still disable Cortana and transform it into the ‘Search Windows’ tool.
Please note that editing registry is a risky process, but you follow each of the mentioned steps religiously, you should be fine. Here’s how you can disable Cortana on Windows 10 Anniversary Update:
Step #1: Open the run menu by pressing Win+R and then type ‘regedit‘.
Step #2: Pressing ‘OK‘ will open the registry editor.
Step #3: Now navigate to the following directory:
Step 4: Right click the ‘Windows Search‘ folder and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
Step #5: Name this value ‘AllowCortana‘. Now double-click it and set the hexadecimal value to ‘0‘. The effect will take place once you restart or sign-in again.
Step #6: You can always re-enable Cortana by changing the hexadecimal value of ‘AllowCortana‘ to ‘1‘ or delete the ‘AllowCortana‘ value.
