How to Control and Monitor Cellular Data Usage on iPhone

#2 Monitor your Cellular Data

1. Go To: Settings from the home screen of your iPhone.

2. In settings you will find “Cellular” tap on it.

3. On the next screen, scroll down of the screen and tap on Reset Statistics.

4. You will get a pop up, saying that you really do want to Reset Statistics on your iPhone. Tap on Reset Statistics to confirm

Now, your iPhone is now ready to measure your data usage, it will help you to measure your data usage from first day to the last day of your monthly billing cycle.

At the end of your monthly billing cycle you will get an exact reading for the amount of Cellular Data used by your iPhone, do on a monthly basis, and start monitoring data usage for the current month vs the previous month. It will help you to check the usage of each month and your costs.

#3. Limit Cellular Data Usage for Apps

There are many apps on the App Store that eats your cellular data, many are unknown, and some are constantly using your Cellular Data in the background, even when you are actually not actually using these apps.

1. Go To: Settings from the home screen of your iPhone.

2. In settings you will find “Cellular” tap on it.

3. On the next screen, you will see a list of apps and the amount of Cellular Data used by these.

4. Make a quick note of these apps, if its not essential and you are not using it much turn off Cellular Data Usage by moving the slider to OFF Position. 

This means you have restricted it not to use the Cellular data for particular list of apps, it will be able to connect to internet, whenever your iPhone is connected to a WiFi network. However, the app will no longer make use of Cellular data for its updates or any activities.

#4. Some of different ways of Reducing Cellular Data Usage

There are other measures that you can implement on your iPhone to make sure that you are making the most out of your WiFi network and reserving Cellular data only for the most essential tasks.

a) Disable Background App Refresh

 

1. GoTo Settings > General > Background App Refresh.

2. On the next screen, you can disable Background App Refresh for selected (background busy) apps by moving the slider next to the apps to OFF Position.

b) Turn off Data Roaming

Most cellular service providers charge a much higher rate for data usage, whenever your phone uses data while it is roaming (outside state or country).

Hence, it is important to Turn Off Data Roaming on your iPhone to completely rule out the possibility of incurring data roaming charges.

1. Tap on Settings > Cellular

2. On the next screen, turn off Data Roaming by moving the slider to OFF position.

c) Disable Cellular Data For iCloud Drive on iPhone

1. Tap on Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive.

2. On the iCloud Drive screen, scroll down to the very bottom and turn off Use Cellular Data option by moving the slider to OFF Position.

d) Disable Cellular Data For Automatic Downloads

Automatic downloads for apps and software updates on your iPhone need not use your expensive cellular data. Some of these downloads and updates can be of large size and are best done by making use of a WiFi Network, which is both fast and free.

1. Tap on Settings > iTunes & App Store

2. On the next screen, scroll down to the bottom and disable Use Cellular Data by moving the slider to OFF position.

e) Disable Push Notifications

Many apps use push notifications in the form of text alerts, sounds and badges. Although such alerts are limited to a maximum of 256 bytes, you may want to turn off push notifications on your iPhone, in case you are not a fan of such notifications or do not want to be bothered by notifications.

1. Go To Settings > Notifications.

2. On the next screen, you will find a list of Apps that are making use of push Notifications on your iPhone. You can go through the list and disable push Notification for all the apps that you do not want to receive notifications from.

#5. Completely Turn Off Cellular Data

This a good measure in case you are looking at a high Data Usage in a particular billing cycle. In such a case, you can completely turn off Cellular Data Usage on your iPhone to make sure that you are not paying more than your expected monthly bill.

1. Go To Settings > Cellular

2. On the next screen, just tap on the slider to turn off cellular data completely

At the beginning of the next billing month, you can go back and Turn ON the cellular option to start using your allowed monthly bandwidth. So these were the simple steps where you can save big money each month !
