In 2nd quarter last year, Xiaomi a four year old startup overtook Samsung to become the biggest selling smartphone maker in China.

Samsung is struggling in countries such as China, India because “they’re sort of being eaten from the bottom up by regional players” including Huawei and Xiaomi, said Ben Bajaran, an analyst at Silicon Valley research firm Creative Strategies.

Until September, before the launch of iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus, Apple lacked one thing to Samsung and other Smartphone makers : a supersized Smartphone screen. The new iPhone 6 measures 4.7 inches and the 6 Plus is 5.5 inches. And that’s made a huge difference

But Xiaomi’s strategy hasn’t put a dent in the iPhone’s momentum in China, and the latest report from Canalys proves it. Instead, Xiaomi’s rise has been more damaging to Samsung, which is still the largest smartphone vendor in the world. Samsung’s profits continue to shrink as consumers choose cheaper Android devices like Xiaomi’s phones that are just as good, but cost about half as much.

Samsung’s fourth straight drop in quarterly earnings, Profit dipped 27 percent to 5.3 trillion won ($4.9 billion).

According to Canalys, Samsung is the third-largest smartphone vendor in China behind Apple and Xiaomi.
